My hands are like garlands

as they circle your strong neck

  1. this makes me smile. beautiful and warm piece. the contrast in their heights is augmented by the contrast in the two metaphors in this poem – garland and unbending mind. two metaphors that appear contrasted but really aren’t. the first, a welcome, the other a stubbornness of sorts. so, welcome to my world tall boy, but this dynamite packs a punch – she won’t be taken for granted. the use of size here is reminiscent of Jonathan swift’s “guliver’s travels.” size is relative – a tall, obviously strong man has to contend with the big strong will (determination) of the physically smaller woman. besides, height, like age in nothing …
